Homeschooling: The future of education

What do Thomas Edison, Theodore Roosevelt, Agatha Christie, Alexander Graham Bell, Serena and Venus Williams have in common? Well, besides being famous personalities, these individuals have all been homeschooled. Homeschooling as an alternative to classroom education has existed for several decades. It was a choice chosen by society’s elite and gifted children. It is a progressive form of education, wherein parents choose to educate their children at home rather than in formalized school settings. It is also referred to as “Home Education”.

The current education system doesn’t provide most of the students with holistic development which is needed to succeed in today’s competitive world. Besides, several believe that ancient school structures, philosophies and pedagogies restrict progress and growth. Hence parents are constantly looking out for other avenues to compensate what schools aren’t able to accomplish. Homeschooling is one such avenue and is a fast-evolving educational preference for Generation Z. According to the U.S. Department of Education, homeschooling has cumulatively grown by 61.8% over the last decade.

Homeschooling is gaining popularity as it provides parents with an opportunity to choose an education model fit for their child’s holistic development. It allows parents to be more involved in their child’s education and there is an array of innovative learning and curriculum options available that helps in overall development. Myriad researches have shown that homeschooled children are more likely to get accepted into college and perform better academically in higher education because their strengths have been nurtured and they have more in-depth and hands-on knowledge about the areas they are interested in.

Online education has become the new normal and it wouldn’t be surprising if more parents choose homeschooling as a way forward in the future. The advent of online learning programs and other digital learning tools has expanded the repertoire of top-notch quality learning resources available for parents and children who opt for homeschooling. Parents with the help of eLearning platforms and online material can now tailor their child’s education to a bespoke model that focuses on the development of strengths, personality, excellence and innovation.

Though several aspects need to be considered while making the decision to home school, understanding the long terms benefits of this investment makes it an attractive choice. But the benefits of home-schooling are plenty. It is flexible and allows parents to determine the curriculum that focuses on the latest innovations, discoveries and careers. Children can get a more hands-on form of learning thus enabling them to understand how theoretical concepts get applied to real-world scenarios. Individual attention, personalized teaching and paced learning allow for mastery of a subject. It encourages the development of special talents like music, sports and also creates a strong bond between parents and children. Most importantly it fosters all-round development, confidence to succeed and a safe environment to make mistakes, grow, develop and mature.

Homeschooling creates an indubitably enriching experience. Just like online education has spiralled into the new normal, home-schooling is in the making of the next paradigm shift in the future of education.
